Summer is a good time to thoughtfully reflect with your student on the past year, and how best to maximize the IU experience. Some questions to consider:
- Did your student set appropriate goals, and did those goals match family/parental goals?
- Has your student created a "degree map" to help plan out courses and decide when to take on internship, research, volunteer and study abroad opportunities?
- Where is there room for your student to take more personal responsibility? Are there areas where your student is taking on too much and needs to learn to let go or ask for help from a peer mentor or career advisor?
- Is this upcoming year the time for your student to become involved with IU’s more than 800 student organizations, or expand leadership skills through participation in the Hoosier Leadership Program?
To support IU families and students, the Dean of Students Office and our 13 units offer more than 150 services and programs, including support for financial planning and bystander intervention training. If you or your student have questions or concerns, contact us and we’ll guide you to the right resources.
While you and your student engage in self-reflection, know that our staff is also talking about how to best support and empower IU students.
We’re saying goodbye to Pete Goldsmith, who is retiring after seven years as dean of students and vice provost for student affairs. Pete has loved being at IU for three tours of duty, but is looking forward to spending time with his grandchildren — and maybe even building a sailboat.
We’re saying welcome to Pete’s successor, Lori Reesor, who will join the Indiana University community in early July. She brings with her a wealth of knowledge about student engagement and creating welcoming communities, and I know her leadership will help our departments and students continue to thrive and grow.
We’re also preparing for IU Family Weekend from Sept. 23 to 25. We hope that this will be a convenient weekend for you and your student to explore campus together and participate in the great events happening that weekend. The schedule for the weekend is still in development, and we invite you to complete a brief survey to help us plan events of interest to you and your students.
Enjoy your summer, and we look forward to welcoming your student back to campus in August!
