Dear IU Community,
IU groundskeepers found five flyers purporting to be from the Ku Klux Klan on North Jordan in the vicinity of 17th Street. These flyers are identical to the ones found in the City of Bloomington and reported by local news media. The IU Police Department is investigating, working with the Bloomington Police Department, and consulting with state authorities. If you find anything like this, have any information about this case, or have concerns related to it please call IU Police Department dispatch at (812) 855-4111. If you have an emergency, please call 911.
The Ku Klux Klan is a vile organization. Its tenets include the same racist, white supremacist, and anti-immigrant views that were espoused by at least one and possibly two of the mass murderers this week, those in El Paso, Texas and Gilroy, California. It is particularly cruel and reprehensible that the KKK has decided that now is an opportune time to litter our community with flyers, appearing with the organization’s typical cowardice under cover of night.
Indiana University rejects in total these views, which are diametrically opposed to our commitments as a public university and as human beings. We also recognize that such activity will cause concerns about safety among members of our community, which is a part of the larger Bloomington community. We remain utterly committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment on our campus, and welcoming our students, faculty, and staff from around the country and the world with open arms.
Yours,
Lauren Robel
