On campus unity

To the IU Bloomington community:

Last Thursday evening, I spoke at the Unity Gathering at Showalter Fountain, organized by Union Board, the Black Student Union, and the IU Student Association. I wanted to share my remarks with the entire campus:

We are one IU

  • We believe in the intrinsic dignity and worth of all the members of our community.

We are one IU

  • We believe that the diversity of our community makes us stronger and we are stronger for the many paths that have brought us all here from every place around the globe.

We are one IU

  • We believe in tolerance, kindness, and the common bonds that unite us.

We are one IU

  • We believe in academic inquiry and open discussion and we believe in respectful and open-hearted disagreement.
  • While we can disagree on many positions, we don’t disagree on our common humanity, on the need to seek and find common ground, and on our support for every one of the members of our Hoosier community.

We are all IU: Every one of us. Full stop. No exceptions.
