In order to keep our campus safe, we will need to lower the number of people in the recreational sports facilities, including the Student Recreational Sports Center, Garrett Fieldhouse, Woodlawn Field and Track, Woodlawn Tennis Courts, SRSC Tennis Courts and the Sembower Recreational Sports Field Complex. Physical distance requirements for recreational sports facilities reduce the capacity of our buildings by 75%, which will reduce greatly the number of people permitted to work out at one time. The campus has made the difficult decision to reserve use of the SRSC, Garrett Fieldhouse, Woodlawn Field and Track, Woodlawn Tennis Courts, SRSC Tennis Courts and the Sembower Recreational Sports Field Complex for students only during the 2020-21 academic year, or until we are instructed by the public health authorities that we can safely increase the capacity of these buildings. Recreational facilities are paid for by student fees, and the students need to have first priority on the use of those facilities. This means that faculty and staff memberships will be suspended as of July 1, 2020, and payroll deductions will also be suspended as of that date, where applicable.
We understand that for many faculty and staff, working out in campus facilities is an important part of your routine and connection to campus, and we are looking forward to opening back up to all of our members as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime, we hope you will take advantage of the free virtual programs available online from the Campus Recreational Sports web page.
The recreational sports facilities and activities will provide invaluable opportunities for our students to learn and connect in new ways during what will be a very unusual year. Thank you for your understanding, and for helping us prioritize these spaces for our students.
