As an incoming Ph.D. student in the Department of Anthropology within the College of Arts and Sciences at IU Bloomington, Gabriel Escobedo knew one thing he wanted to do on campus: dance. “When I dance, I feel my Latino identity,” Escobedo explained. Now, as director of the Latino dance group Paso a Paso, Escobedo has found a way to do just that.
Paso a Paso was created as a way to connect students to Latino culture, to educate them about the history and meaning of traditional dances, and of course, to teach the dances themselves. All students are welcome to attend these free dance workshops, many of which are held at La Casa, the Latino cultural center at IU Bloomington. “It doesn’t matter who you are,” Escobedo said. “You are welcome to come and learn about our culture, because we want to share it.”
