Jacobs School of Music sophomore Gabe Young, an oboist, was named the winner of the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute’s concerto competition in July 2015. As the winner, Young was invited to perform the Marcello Oboe Concerto with the Summer Music Institute’s Orchestra on the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage in Washington, D.C. He also played the principal oboe part on Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in the second half of the program.
The National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute is a four-week intensive music program located at the Kennedy Center, where 60 students from the United States and Canada participate in private lessons taught by orchestra members, receive chamber music coaching, attend master classes, rehearse side-by-side with the orchestra and perform two full concerts. The winner of the program’s multi-round concerto competition is invited to perform with the Summer Music Institute Orchestra at its final concert.
Young is a student of Linda Strommen, professor of oboe at the Jacobs School of Music.
