Cuban harpist Anabel Gutierrez Orraca began her collegiate music training in the fall of 2015 at IU Bloomington’s Jacobs School of Music with a very specific goal in mind. “Cuba sent me here with a purpose to learn as much as I can,” Gutierrez Orraca said. “In Cuba, we don't have a harp department at the university, so I’ll be going back and starting the harp department there.”
Gutierrez Orraca became interested in IU Bloomington after meeting violinist and Jacobs professor Mauricio Fuks while he was visiting Cuba. After applying and gaining admission to the Jacobs School, Gutierrez Orraca was matched with Susann McDonald, Distinguished Professor of Music and chair of the Harp Department. “My teacher here has always been my idol,” Gutierrez Orraca said. “Working with Susann McDonald is the best experience a harp student could possibly have.”
