The Humans of Bloomington storytelling project was developed by a small group of students in Nicole Schonemann’s service advocacy class in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
The students—Allison Shepler, who will graduate from IU in 2016, along with recent graduates Kristen Shrader and Kevin Hinkle—were inspired by popular social media posts from Humans of New York, a multimedia project that shares the stories of everyday New Yorkers. The IU students combed the city and interviewed Bloomington residents in cafes, shops, and on the street. “The overall goal was to … let people know that there are people out there that enjoy the same things as them, have gone through the same things in life, and they’re not alone,” said Allison Shepler, an undergraduate management major. Schonemman said that as new people continue to be trained, the project will continue long after the founders have completed their degrees and moved on.
