To better support IU Bloomington department chairs and program directors, the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs launched a new Department Chair Leadership Series today (Aug. 18, 2022).
Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs Eliza Pavalko said the series is designed to provide important information on the inner workings of campus as well as opportunities to develop leadership skills. She added that the new training is a nice complement to the existing, high-quality Department Executive Officers Seminar offered through the Big Ten Academic Alliance, which enrolls five chairs a year. “We’ve done both formal and informal chair workshops for years, but the number of topics they need to know about has increased,” Pavalko said. “Making the new program available to all chairs provides broader support for the campus.”
Pavalko’s office sent an invitation to all 150+ department chairs (and directors who supervise academic appointees and make decisions on hiring, tenure, or promotion of academic appointees). Deans and associate deans are also invited to attend. So far, 120 are registered for the Thursday, Aug. 18, event in President’s Hall, “Campus Finance, Strategic Priorities, and Faculty Promotion and Tenure: What Chairs and Directors Need to Know.” The workshops will continue monthly through April with an additional, virtual August 26 session on faculty hiring.
Other sessions cover strategic leadership, Title IX and ADA, the Clifton Strengths Assessment, conflict navigation, and assessment of department/center strengths and weaknesses.
