Student Voting Guide

Your vote, your voice

Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy and one of the most important duties we have as citizens.

Indiana University encourages you to fulfill your civic duty and shape our collective future by voting in the primary and general elections, in Indiana or by absentee ballot in your home state. Help us beat the other Big 10 schools in the Big Ten Voting Challenge! Learn more and get involved with events through IU's Political and Civic Engagement program

Big Ten Voting Challenge

Indiana University is participating in the Big Ten Voting Challenge, a nonpartisan, student-directed, friendly competition among the 14 Big Ten universities to encourage students to exercise their right to vote. BTVC is focusing on voter registration and helping inform voters about upcoming deadlines.

IU will continue to support student voting and enthusiastically respond to the challenge by mobilizing students and campus organizations to register voters, disseminate non-partisan information, and increase participation in the November 2019 elections and beyond.

The Big Ten Voting Challenge receives support from the Office of the President, the IU Student Association, the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President, and the Political and Civic Engagement Program.

Registered voters may vote up to 28 days prior to the election at the office of the county election board or a satellite facility.

By mail: Under certain circumstances, registered voters may also vote by mail if they expect to be absent from the county they are registered to vote in during election day, or meet a set of other criteria. Visit the Indiana Election Division Voter Information Portal for more information.

Registering for elections

In-state students

In Indiana, college students may register to vote at one of two places:

  1. Your address while attending school (your on- or off-campus IU residence)
  2. Your address while not attending school

  • If you're qualified to vote and register using your on-campus address, be sure to list your residence hall's street address and your room number.
  • You can register, update your registration, and confirm your registration online via the Indiana Statewide Voter Registration System if you have a valid Indiana driver's license or Indiana state-issued ID card.

If you don't have a valid Indiana driver's license or state-issued identification, you may register to vote in person at your county's voter registration office or by mail.

  • Download and print the VRG-7 state voter registration form (PDF) from the Indiana Election Division website.
  • Note: If you register to vote by mail and have not registered to vote in Indiana before, you will be required to present documents at the polling place that confirm your residence address. This is in addition to the Photo ID requirement. For more information, visit the Indiana Election Division Voter Information Portal.
